Trail Report: Benzie-Manistee Snowmobile Club - 03/05

Currently No Snow falling anywhere with warm up temps high 30's to low 40's by day to high twenty's at night all week. Rain moving in Sunday to Wednesday. With melt down we lost some snow on our trail. The trail on Highbridge Rd. from Old House Rd into the woods on River Rd is dirt with sparse snirty in woods and the bridge is dirt along with some curves through-out south system. The south end from Copemish to Wellston is poor through woods with thin to no base. North end from Thompsonville to Maple City is fair to GOOD with 2 in to 5 in base, holding up well from snow fall two weeks ago. Joe from north end of trail said he rode on Tuesday down to Copemish it was good. But he tried to ride again Thursday said it's groomed and it was only good from Maple city down to M-31 and down to Thompsonville is fair. So it looks like 40 temps are taking toll on all our trail. We have off trail ground cover of 1 - 6 inches.

More info on our web about who to contact www.benziemanisteesnowbirds.com

Benzie Visitor Bureau - 03/03

Hi all, Well we're starting to get a little warmer this week! High 30ish yesterday and today and up around 40 Friday and Saturday, with no snow forecast, so we're losing a bit of the trail with every day right now, but its at least freezing up again at night. BUt you know how that makes the trail! It's getting a bit snirty and soft on some curves and hills and showing thin in some areas. Kaleva area I'm told is thin with little to no base but yet the north end from Copemish to Maple City is better with 2 to 5in base yet, holding up with the snow that fell last week. Off trail depth and ground cover is anywhere from an inch to 6 or 8 inches! s. Trails were groomed from Copemish north to Maple city Monday night and they are trying again tonite since its still certainly ride-able but we're gonna have to wait and see about the weekend. Keep up the snow dance and cross your fingers that we get colder. Remember the groomers are volunteers so if ya see one, get outta their way and give them a thumbs up. Hey thanks Steven and Patrick for the pics! OMG I LOVE EM! And thanks for the emails Rog and Craig !I love getting emails and hearing your stories and reports and pics! Remember this report is all of us working it together! BE SAFE, BE SMART, and I'll SEEYA on the trails! Carol

Trail Report: Petoskey Snowmobile Club - 02/28
Current Trail Conditions: Fair

The northern trails are still in pretty decent shape although today's warmer temps have softened things up quite a bit. You will start to see some dirt until we get more snow. Grooming on the northern trails will be done every three or four days. We are not seeing very much traffic so excess grooming will do more harm than good.

Trail 76 South (The Larry's Run) is not being groomed at this time due to insufficient snow and icy hills. You can still ride that trail but expect very poor and rough conditions.

Mancelona Trail Report
Jordan Valley Trails Council
Updated: 02/22/10
Current Trail Conditions: Poor

Everything around here is pretty brown. The bluebear and cranberry were groomed today, the alba/manci/settings connecters on sunday. Its all flat south of starvation lake, but imo,too brown to ride. Grooming will be only as required to keep it smooth for new snow, not daily.

Trail Report:
Don't worry the snow will be back next year, so park your sled for the summer and get the ATV's out. Why not have some fun trail riding on our ATV. Most all of the snow and ice are gone now, but there is beautiful mud to play in. We have one of the largest ORV trail systems in the State, with over 200 miles of ORV trails, plus Steelhead are in the rivers right now, so bring a pole and plenty of fishing line. These fish are pound for pound the toughest fish swimming in Michigan.
We still have a couple rooms and On- site ATV rentals weather permitting. Call 231 745 4101 8am until 10pm.
Our Weekday Special for March, Sunday through Thursday is stay two days and get the third day free, No Fridays or Saturdays free. You must mention the specials at the time of the reservation and of course these specials are dependent on availability and can not be combined with any other offer.
Plus we are in the middle of one of the largest ORV trail systems in the state, so if the snow isn't that great for snowmobiling, bring your ORV up and ride over 200 miles of ORV trails. PLEASE DON'T RIDE YOUR ORV ON THE GROOMED SNOWMOBILE TRAILS. There are plenty of open trails available for ORV riding. Don't worry winter isn't over for snowmobiling, but a winter ORV ride can be a blast too. If you don't have a snowmobile or yours is broken, no problem, WE HAVE ON-SITE SNOWMOBILE RENTALS right here at the Resort. There is good snow in the woods, so two tracken and seasonal roads are a blast right now. (Which there are tons of). 231 745 4101 8am until 10pm

Rooms and ON-SITE Snowmobile Rentals are available.

We are members of the Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan, Baldwin Trailriders Snowmobile Club, Benzie/Manistee Snowbirds Snowmobile Club, Irons Area Tourist Association Snowmobile Club, Wellston Area Recreation and Tourist Bureau Snowmobile Club, Lake County ORV Club and the Michigan Snowmobile Association, which are the local grooming clubs. I can not thank these guys and gals enough, they do a lot of work for free, so we all can enjoy this sport. I would only think that if someone is complaining about a bumpy trail on Saturday afternoon, come to a couple club meetings and see just what these people do. They would never complain again. Thank you again.
Check out the WOLFCAM for the snow totals.

Visit our ATV & SNOW REPORT

Here is a list of the snowmobile trails in this area, are you ready? The Baldwin trails go south from here for 146 miles to Newago, Irons trails wrap around Wolf Lake and then heads north for 122 miles and connects to Cadillac and Wellston trails, Cadillac trails connect into the Irons and Wellston trails all the way to Cadillac, then south to Leroy, they groom 124 miles. Wellston trails connect to Cadillac to the east, Benzie/Manistee trails and Irons trails to the north and west to Stronach for 68 miles, Pere Marquette trail connects to The Baldwin trail and all the way to Evart and up to Leroy to the Cadillac trail system for 144 miles, the south Pere Marquette trail runs to Grand Rapids I think about 140 miles. The Benzie/Manistee trails run north of the Wellston trail all the way to the Empire Airport on the Bear lake and Platte river trails another 150 miles I think. Let's total this up, 146 + 122 + 124 + 68 + 144 + 140 + 150 = 894 in groomed connecting trails just in this area alone and we are right in the middle of them. I don't know about you but that's a ton of riding. Now there is more trails to get to, but that would be just over kill and this is not even counting all of the two tracks and seasonal roads that you can ride. Why spent an extra $200 to $300 in fuel to get to Gaylord or the UP when we have fantastic riding right here and spend that money on snowmobile fuel.

We have two bedroom lake front rooms with full kitchens, living rooms with a sofa sleeper, (sleeps 6), double lake front rooms with a queen and full beds and a kitchenette (sleeps 4). Double motel rooms with two double beds and a mini fridge, (sleeps 4) and single motel rooms with one full bed, (sleeps 2) and a large Bunk House which has two bed rooms with queen bunk beds and a queen sofa sleeper, (sleeps Ten), full kitchen, full living room, a bar and a fireplace. We have something for everyone.

Call 231 745 4101 8am until 10pm. See ya soon on the trails.

Trail Report: FROM THE CADILLAC WINTER PROMOTIONS
Tuesday--March 2, 2010

The latest word from our Trail Coordinator:

"The warm temps. and sun are taking their tolls on the trails. The snow is melting FAST. The trails in and out of the towns and the RR trails are almost non-ridable. If you were to trailer out to the parking lots, you will find the wide forest and county seasonal roads still have some good snow cover, but they are getting very thin in the corners. The tight-twisty trails in the wooded areas are very brown, and less snow covered every day. There is still a lot of great riding, you just to have to go looking for it.

Due to the current conditions, and the forecast of warmer temps to come, Winter Promotions have parked our groomers again.

When we get that March snow storm that we get every year, DON'T hesitate, call in sick and jump on your sled. The snow from these March storms generally only lasts for a day or 2!!"

Trail Report: FROM THE CADILLAC WINTER PROMOTIONS
Wednesday, March 18, 2009

I think it's safe to say our riding season if over. There doesn't seem to be any major storm in for forecast for the next week or so and we have had some lovely spring-like days lately that have melted away the snow and ice.

We hope you enjoyed the trails this winter and will make a point to get involved with one of the grooming organizations to help brush and sign trails this summer. That function of trail maintenance is as important as trail grooming and goes on all summer long. Check out the msasnow.org for a list of those organizations.

Have a safe and fun summer and we'll look forward to seeing you on the trails next winter.

Alpine Snowmobile Trails Trail Report - Gaylord Area

Photo Caption: yes

Trail Report: The Michigan Snowmobile Association has put out the following statement:

GAYLORD GROOMING PROGRAM STILL A QUESTION ?
In September 2008 the DNR received a letter from the Gaylord Area Trails stating that they could not go on grooming their area unless some things changed in the contract with the DNR. The department concluded that they could not agree to the changes requested and decided to do something different in the area.

The department has requested that the Department of Management & Budget put the area trails out to bid. The first bid for signing, brushing, and grooming went out in October. The department reviewed the bid received and split out the signing & brushing portion and awarded it to a local contractor. They did not like the way the grooming portion was bid and revise the bid spec and sent it out again. The bid for grooming this portion of trails was due on November 17. At the time of this writing MSA has not heard who was awarded this contract.

MSA of course has concerns; we are going to watch this process very carefully. On one hand the department is trying a process that has never been done in Michigan. Will it save the program money? Will it provide the snowmobiler with the trails that they have become accustomed to by the current Grant Sponsors? These and many more question will hopefully be answered over the course of this winter. As we are afforded more information we will keep you all posted. So if you’re on the Gaylord trails system let us know what you found in riding through the area, good and bad.

We encourage anyone with questions to call the DNR Gaylord Office.

Ray's Retreat Country Inn - 02/10

Just got back from a 77 mile ride. BEAUTIFUL! … the worst of it was right at the start when we headed down trail 7 to Waters to get gas, and then to Frederick. The trail from here to Waters marginal. Icy, frozen dirt, and snow. Waters to Frederick conditions improved with more snow on the trail, just a few chatter bumps. Once we crossed over Old 27 taking trail 7 south we had a great ride. 70 miles of fun.

Trail 7 to 79 over to Starvation Lake, where we picked up trail 4 and then followed 4 on home. This was all good to excellent riding. Plenty of snow. Most of this 70 mile ride was just groomed so it was smooth sailing. Very few riders out. Groomers are doing an excellent job with the marginal snowfall we’ve had this year.

Nothing to complain about when out of the 77 miles, only 7 miles was fair riding. Its been a few weeks since we’ve had a chance to get out and really ride, so we enjoyed the entire day.

Give us a call if you’re eager to get out and enjoy the trails. Stay with us one time and you’ll understand why Rays Retreat is Snowmobilers First Choice. We also have snowmobile rentals available. 989-732-4914 or 989-732-2703.

Trail Report: Its sad looking... most of the trail. Right out in front of us, is a nice stretch of snow covered trail. And you can still find snow to ride in, its just much harder and you have to be willing to go thru alot of dirt, mud, and rough conditions to get to it!

Its been a disappointing season with so little snow. More disappointment that it could be done and over with already. But its certainly not worth a drive up north to ride your sleds.

Fay's Motel Trail Report - Grayling

Trail Report: Greetings Sledders,

Over is over, period. This has been the worst non-winter that we've seen in the ten years that we've been here in Grayling. It started out looking like a promising one then went to hell in a hand bag and never recovered as you well know.

Here's a few numbers to share with you as a re-cap, we groomed 4570 miles that was accomplished with 640 volunteer man hours and spent 94 hours fixing stuff and the maint. hours are probably light as I don't always account for a half hour here and there. Last year we groomed over 8000 miles with 1200 man hours consumed.

I must hand it to our guys and commend them for a job well done given what they've had to work with. GREAT JOB GUYS IN DOING WHAT YOU'RE NOT GETTING PAID TO DO !!!!

It is our hope that we have accurately communicated trail conditions to you via the internet and telephone during these snow starved times. It's always difficult to report conditions when snowfall is skimpy as one person's decent ride can be another's worst nightmare.

In closing, thanks to all of you that chose Fay's Motel as your destination this season, we appreciate your patronage more than you will ever realize.

Please Be Safe at whatever it is that you do in the off season, Keith, Sandy and The Girls

Specials & Events: At Fay's Motel enjoy direct access to the Grayling Area snowmobile trails.

Halfway Lake Resort Trail Report - Newberry

Trail Report: Good Morning,

The temps have been very warm and looks like those temps will hold through next week.

A guest leaving this morning reported trail #8, 432 and 433 are still in good shape. Trail #9 is okay. I walked around the north end of the lake yesterday afternoon, was able to stay ontop of the snow in most places. When I did break through the snow I went down about 10" to 12". It's beautiful again today, if this keeps this could be the last of the season unless we get a snow storm soon. History tells me there is snow in the future, but who knows when. Guaranteed it will be before Memorial Day.

Report copied and pasted from TASA:

All trails are in good/fair condition but we have had a little meltdown due to warmer weather so please be careful and enjoy the riding. The trails in town are just in fair condition but as you go out north they get better and are in good condition. We only got about 4-6 inches of snow Friday night. Warm weather forcast for the up coming week. Mid 30's

Trail #9 north is in fair condition.Watch for water on the trail when leaving the staging area near the railroad tracks, Once you get past the 3 mile staging area things get better. The base is 6-8 inches north and groomers are reporting fair conditions. Be carful on the straight away between M-123 and 3 mile staging area, mogals form there quick depending on how many sleds go over it. There are some bare spots close to town. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE IS LOGGING ON THE TRAIL ABOUT 8 MILES NORTH, SO WATCH FOR LOGGING TRUCKS

Trail #45 North is in fair condition with a 6-8 inch base, but, there are 2 logging areas on it. One north, and one south, of the Skyline Trail Head. It is plowed and can be rough at times. The trail from Co. Rd. 500 to the Falls is in fair shape. Due to ice it took the groomer 3 attempts to get up the hill just south of M-123

Check the snow depth map to see all the snow that we have here at Halfway Lake.

Luce County Snowmobile Trail Closed for Season Due to Warm Weather

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment today announced
that the Raco Snowmobile Trail from Paradise south to Silver Creek
(Trail #8) and the Tahquamenon Falls trail (Trail #45) has been closed
and gated for the season due to unsafe trail conditions. The current
unseasonably warm weather coupled with the lack of snowfall has made
this closure necessary.

Snowmobilers planning to travel to the eastern Upper Peninsula are
advised to check trail conditions daily as they are changing quickly
with the current weather conditions.

Questions concerning this closure may be directed to Newberry Fire
Supervisor Paul Gaberdiel at 906-293-3293, extension 4740, or DNRE
Recreation Specialist Dan Moore at 906 293 5131, extension 4045.

Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Straits Area Snowmobile Club Trail Report - St. Ignace

Trail Report: I just listened to the message from last nights groom on the Northern Loop.

I am sorry to say, that we are about all done. I could pick and choose and tell what is ridable, and what is not, but there is no decent loops, and no getting from one destination to another without encountering difficulty. This weekend and next weeks forecast shows no signs of snow, and temps above freezing for the next 10 days.

If you rode this area this year, thanks for checking out our local community, if not, then hopefully we will see you next season.

Once I have the final numbers, I will post up the tally, but I think we were on track to groom about 15% of our normal mileage this season. That is not to say the trails were bad all winter, in fact they were pretty smooth and ridable for a good chunk of the winter, there was just not enough snow to make bumps to groom.

This is the end to a sorry season on many levels. So this is Snow VP, signing off Trail Conditions for the 2010 season (unless we get a 100 yr snowstorm that is!)

Snowblitz Snowmobile Rentals Trail Report - Traverse City

Trail Report: Luckily over the past few days with the warm temps we have also had some wind which has cooled down the temperature a few degrees this has minimized the amount of snow lost. trails are still covered in 90% of places and locals are still our riding. Off the trails is better again as there is still a good 1 1/2 feet of snow in most places. Businesses with plowed roads or side walks leading to them are probably mostly down to dirt. Ranch Rudolf is still accessible staying on snow, since the trails come right to our door. Probably another two weeks max of riding depending on what happens. WE are meant to get snow/sleet Monday and Tuesday. thanks Brett

The trails are holding up good even though we haven't had any snow lately. The groomers are still are still going out as scheduled. It will be a another great weekend for riding so come on up, you never know when it's going to end. When you are out riding make sure to watch for groomers we've had a couple of close calls this year.

The boardman is still in good shape. High traffic last weekend, however, the trails held up well. Most of the trail is snow covered. There are a few rough spots down by Fife Lake and around the Ranch. Riding is still great. We are looking forward to a couple more weeks of good riding. We found some great snow in the woods yesterday. Some areas in the woods still have about 3 feet or so. Seasonal roads, 2 tracks, and powerlines are in great shape.

We have plenty of snowmobiles left for the weekend. Get off the couch and come up here and play in the snow !

FRESH SNOW…? We finally received some fresh snow, nothing like down state, however we got 3-4" yesterday and the trails were groomed last night and will be again tonight. It seems like the snow hit towards Ranch Rudolf and Kalkaska, not so much in Leelanau County. So it looks great for another awesome weekend riding, we also have the snowcross up here at the casino on Saturday. No rentals for the snow cross thanks……At this point it seems like we will squeak out at least two more weekends of descent riding on the Boardman Valley trail. Have a great weekend Cheers Brett

Trail Report: Warm temps and sunshine has ended riding here on the White Pine. Thanks to Pere Marquette Snowmobile Club for their grooming again this year! I would also like to thank the Moderator for providing these web pages, and supporting the activity that is our passion.

The White Pine trail is the former Railroad track stretching from Rockford to Cadillac. Not a challenging trail, but great for families with many towns to visit along the way.

Specials & Events: Check out the rest rooms and fire pit at Reed City at the White Pine/Pere Marquette trail intersections! It's the brick building on the trail.
