The snow was dry and fluffy. I rode Friday night and after 5 sleds down the trail after the groomer you could not tell it was groomed. The Benzie area usually only grooms Friday afternoon on parts of the trail and Saturday night. Usually Sunday is the best or early Friday afternoon. I asked one guy what the H@!! he is doing there. His response is I'm looking for some property. I told him he is full of it since his front plate was from the local car dealer. I almost think the locals in Benzie don't want people riding on the trails. I rode on seasonal roads for 150 miles this weekend and didn't see any car tracks and on 150 miles of State trails I saw six cars. Total for the year, 12 cars and trucks in 700 miles on groomed trails. This past Saturday I almost got hit twice by two different cars on the trails. Not to mention I tipped my sled because the car ruts were that bad. It seemed very funny that I say two cars out and every trail I was on had car tracks. What is going on. But you stated it was dark. Was it 2pm or 2am? The news story I got was afternoon. <br><br>It's terrible either way...and really makes me think twice about my decision to keep the sleds this year (wife convinced me to stay with it). I had everything for sale. Why? Income first, and the multiple close calls and a heated exchange of words with a guy last year over trail etiquette second. So for this year...the 16 year old boy and my wife have Tek Vests. The 14 year old girl WILL NOT drive solo anymore. And the riding with the family was going to be limited to the Benzie system. Now I am wondering if that's even a good idea. It was dark out and he was only less than 1/4 mile away from his cabin when his right ski caught a tree at a high rate of speed and tossed him from the machine. This type of accident is very preventable and it shouldn't happen.It has created an empty spot in the lives of alot of people. So please , before you go out, think safety not speed.Your loved ones are counting on you to come home safe.Thanks for your concern. Where was everyone again? This past weekend we rode around Benzie County and experienced nothing but polite, courteous riders. We were on a family trip. This involves us riding 15-25mph for the whole day. Now last time we were in the U.P. this didn't go so well. Bad experiences, no need for details, we're just not going back as a family until the kids are much older and can do at least 35mph on straightaways...probably 4+ years. But the past 3 trips in the lower have been great! Even the guys in a hurry slow down, give plenty of room when passing both ways and slow when passing while we are stopped. It was a great weekend! Trails were thin late Saturday, that sun is really intense this time of year, even when it's cold on the mecury, the snow melts fast! We rode back roads late in the day and evening.
